Marvis H Neptune is a book series written for young adults which narrates the adventures of a twelve-year-old boy lost at sea, longing to be a pirate and facing numerous challenges during his journey. The website’s aim is to promote the books and create a space for the series’ young audience to interact with the material they are reading about and learn more about the author and the subjects, places, objects, and animals referenced in his writings.

From Paper to Digital
During the earliest planning phase, the most important goal was to successfully convert on a digital medium, the feel that the author created on paper. This had to be achieved without losing the imaginative and captivating atmosphere of the books. Ron, the author, wanted the website to be informative, interactive, and educational, thus, we anticipated this to be a development-heavy project from the start. The client was envisioning images that could be clicked on, external links, and maps that our team had to visually incorporate in the website without harming its responsiveness. These elements included a few pre-existing illustrations, drawn by an artist Ron had previously involved in the project, that had to be integrated into the design. These evocative pictures, eventually, became the main inspiration for what our designer ultimately suggested to the author.
From Digital to Life
Is there a better way to capture the experience of touching paper other than helping the user to visualize its surface? Our designer didn’t think so. That’s why the website is built on paper-like, textured backgrounds which are overlapped by illustrations and images resembling watermarks. The colors utilized and the sections transitions echoing watercolor smears, work together to recreate a sea habitat and the waves sweeping over it. The pages are populated by a plethora of sea creatures, algae, and bubbles which move across and around the screen, bringing to life what’s written. We managed to incorporate in a creative fashion the interactive features the author requested, such as the informative external links and numbered, hoverable labels on top of certain images. Our development team expertly executed the designer’s vision while optimizing the website’s loading time and preserving the performance of all the interactive features included in it.
